Program:
Joseph Haydn - String Quartet no. 2 op. 20 in C major
Haydn’s quartet no. 2 op. 20 in C major celebrates the conversational aspect of combining four string instruments and giving them equal importance. The quartet opens with a cello solo, an unusual and truly innovative practice at the time in music history, which Haydn masterfully developed. The second movement begins with a dramatic unison and continues to captivate the listener with sudden dynamic changes and deeply emotional melodies. After a delightful Minuet in the third movement, the quartet ends with a Fuge in the final, fourth movement.
Dmitri Shostakovich - String Quartet no. 8 op. 110 in C minor
Composed in the 1960’s in a span of just 3 days while Shostakovich was visiting Dresden, a city in Germany that had been destroyed during World War II, String Quartet no.8 remains one of the composer’s most famous works. Dedicated to “ the victims of fascism and war”, the quartet is in five movements played attacca (without a pause between the movements) and opens with Shostakovich’s signature four- note motif - DSCH, a theme we can hear throughout the quartet in different voices.
