Paul Dahlin

Paul and Marikay Dahlin have been actively teaching and sharing their music for over 40 years at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, Folklore Village, Dodgeville WI and places here and in Sweden.  In 1985, Paul began the American Swedish Institute Spelmanslag (fiddling team), continuing the legacy of traditional Dalarna fiddle music brought by his grandfather 100 years ago.  The spelmanslag is still going strong after all these years.  Paul and Marikay currently live in Two Harbors, sharing tunes with new friends there.

They continue to develop and maintain strong relationships with folk fiddlers in Sweden today, whether they go there or when fiddlers come to the USA.  This music is very alive and revered in Sweden today: they are recognized by Swedes as authentically preserving this part of Swedish culture in America..  Paul has been the recipient of a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Swedish government awarded him the title of Knight First Class of the Royal Order of the Polar Star.

REPRISE

REPRISE is the next generation of musicians in Minnesota that play traditional Swedish folk melodies in the style of Paul's grandfather.  Edwin Johnson brought the music of his homeland one hundred years ago in 1924.  He freely shared the tunes with his son, grandson and anyone who expressed an interest,  In the traditional way, REPRISE members learn to play the tunes by ear, and harmony parts are improvised, adding spontaneity and energy to performances.

ENSEMBLE REPRISE features:
Paul Dahlin - fiddle
Kristen Niehaus - fiddle
Raine Nyembwe - fiddle
Jennifer Olsen - fiddle and guitar
Marikay Dahlin - zither (cittra) and bass

All are members of the current and next generation of folk fiddlers from the American Swedish Institute, Minneapolis, MN.
